UNILAG Students Paralyse Commercial Activities In ‘Exorbitant Rates’ Protest

Commercial activities were halted at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, yesterday, as students protested what they described as ‘exorbitant rates by the vendors in the campus.’ “Some students came yesterday and asked us to lock our shops complaining that our prices are too exorbitant. But they should have resorted to dialogue first before asking us to lock up,” an official of UNILAG vendors association said. The Assistant General Secretary of the law society which was at the forefront of the protest, Mr. Dare Adeojo said: “This is a very welcome development, and we are well within our rights. “We have declared a 24-hour boycott and lock down of the shops within the campus. How can we buy noodles for N80 when it’s being sold at N60 outside? And why should pure water be N10?” Another vendor who explained some of the reasons for the hike in price of goods on the campus said, “When we came here in 1996, it cost about N16,000 per annum to rent a shop. About five years ago, t...

Another Porn Movie Enters Nigeria From Ghana

Image
These days, Nigerian street corners are saturated with movies that should only be sold discreetly in some designated outlets, due to their visible adult content.  But it has been gathered that most of the movies are brought into Nigeria from Ghana and as such do not pass through necessary screéning. Reacting to the issue, Nigerian Censors Board head, Ms Patricia Bala, said: “Because it’s an underground thing, it keeps coming up, and we have been trying to trace the sources enough to understand that most of these movies emanate from P0*nographic sites on the internet. We have been trying to trace the people who operate such sites on internet. “We have been to Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and they said they don’t regulate content on the internet. “Our next approach is to approach YouTube and other site managers that do such business, so that we can stop them. As a matter of fact, we want those sites ...

Jonathan Has Constitutional Rights To Go For Second Term

Image
The Founder of the O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Frederick Fasheun, on Sunday said that President Goodluck Jonathan had a constitutional right to run for a second term in office. Fasheun said that the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly only recently acknowledged the right of Jonathan to seek two terms in Office, as provided for in the Constitution. The controversy had trailed the the third conference of the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly (SNPA) held on May 20, at the Eko Hotels in Lagos. The leaders at the Conference had been accused of unanimously endorsing Jonathan for the 2015 presidential polls. “The Forum only acknowledged that the President has the constitutional rights to contest in 2015,” Fasheun  said in Lagos. “The SNPA was attended by credible leaders of Southern Nigeria. These leaders cannot but say the truth about the constitutional rights of the President. “However, Nigerians also have a right to decide either to vote for him or not, but we cannot deny him...

"You just have to look at the facts," the 29-year-old midfielder said. "Yes he damaged Spanish football, in general more harm than good. "But I don't like talking about that person at all. So if you don't mind we'll leave it at that." Mourinho and Iniesta have previously feuded in the media earlier this ...

The Nigerian midfielder is been courted by the Turkish Champions

Image
With the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Chelsea for a second stint, word out of England say that Turkish champions, Galatasaray are courting Mikel Obi to move to Turkey. Respected sources from London revealed to Goal that though the Europa League champions have not made Mikel available, they could be swayed with a big-money move from any club for a player in his position. “It is true that Galatasaray are interested. And if Chelsea see big money for a player in his position (defensive midfield), I am sure they will sell,” the source revealed to Goal . It will also be recalled that it was Jose Mourinho was the one that brought the Nigerian to London after a battle with Manchester United in 2006. But the question will be whether Mikel will want to leave the club where he has won multiple titles including the Champions League. The source added that, “He could move if he believes he will enjoy more playing time at the Turkish club.” Galatasaray signed Didier Drogba and Wes...

Anti-Gay Marriage Protests Flares Up the French Open Final Restrained By Security.

Image
Anti-gay marriage protesters’ plans to disrupt the French Open final between Rafel Nadal and David Ferrer was foiled, seconds before the bare-chested man almost ran into the court in the course of the second set. It took the quick response of security personnel to restrain actions that could have held up play for quite a while. A few minutes earlier, two bare-chested men stood up in the front rows of the Chatrier Stadium, holding a banner accusing France of trampling on children’s rights. The protesters were said to be disillusioned by France’s decision to legalise gay marriage as others called on President Francois Hollande to resign. Activists campaigned against gay marriage and adoption by same-s*x couples, with full support from the Catholic Church and conservative opposition, arguing that the law undermines the moral building block of the society. Last month, the first same-s*x union was carried out under tight security. The protest almost cooled the Va-va-vroom i...

UNDERSTAND YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM BETTER As Computer Simulations Shed New Light On How The Immune System Works

Image
Researchers at McGill University in Montreal have developed computer simulations that better explain how a person’s immune cells can detect foreign antigens and fight infections. In an effort to determine exactly how the body’s natural defenses are able to sort through large amounts of similar-looking proteins in order to locate and eliminate harmful invaders, physics professor Paul François and graduate student Jean-Benoît Lalanne used computational tools to study how the process works. They discovered that the antigen-fighting process is related to the phenomenon of biochemical adaptation – a mechanism that enables organisms to cope with a variety of different environmental conditions. According to the authors of the study, their work could prove essential insight into AIDS and other immune diseases. “For immune cells, singling out foreign proteins is like looking for a needle in a haystack – where the needle may look very much like a straw,...
