Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, on Thursday advised Nigerians not to cheapen the country’s educational system by saying that “its degrees are worthless”. Observation on Nigerian Graduates in Abuja that Nigerian graduates were not underprivileged and unintelligent but good with great skills. He said people tend to describe Nigerian degrees as worthless because the demand for them was less than the supply of graduates into the labour market every year. Okojie said the notion came about because of the unemployment rate in the country, adding that it should not be the yardstick for measuring the quality of the graduates. “The problem is that there is no balance on the sides of demand and supply. A Kerosene explosion yesterday killed a young lady identified as Miss Ifeoma Nwofe and injured her two siblings at their parent’s residence in Azuiyiokwu, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Reports say the victim, who suffered severe burns all over her body, could not receive treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where she was rushed to because of the ongoing doctors’ strike. Ifeoma later died at a private hospital due to lack of prompt medical attention. The deceased’s siblings, Linda 8, and Chiemerie, 10 are still in critical condition. Reports say the explosion occurred as Ifeoma was trying to light the family’s lantern after electric power cut. This development has raised suspicion that the kerosene might have been adulterated. Allegedly gang-r*ped by three boys, an 18-year-old girl has committed suicide at her residence in Amarata, a suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. The deceased, simply identified as Janet, was a native of Oduali in Abua/Odua Local Government Area of Rivers State. According to reports, she was gang-r*ped at gunpoint by the boys, who forced her into an uncompleted building last week, while she was running an errand for her elder sister. “The girl was sad and devastated after the incident. After she narrated her experience, her sister’s husband, who is a pastor, asked her to describe any of her attackers. She described one of them. “The boy was traced to his house, but he had absconded. The pastor counselled her and promised to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion,” a source said, but did not say if the matter was reported to the police or if the girl was taken to a hospital after the incident. Commercial activities were halted at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, yesterday, as students protested what they described as ‘exorbitant rates by the vendors in the campus.’ “Some students came yesterday and asked us to lock our shops complaining that our prices are too exorbitant. But they should have resorted to dialogue first before asking us to lock up,” an official of UNILAG vendors association said. The Assistant General Secretary of the law society which was at the forefront of the protest, Mr. Dare Adeojo said: “This is a very welcome development, and we are well within our rights. “We have declared a 24-hour boycott and lock down of the shops within the campus. How can we buy noodles for N80 when it’s being sold at N60 outside? The Founder of the O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Frederick Fasheun, on Sunday said that President Goodluck Jonathan had a constitutional right to run for a second term in office. Fasheun said that the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly only recently acknowledged the right of Jonathan to seek two terms in Office, as provided for in the Constitution. The controversy had trailed the the third conference of the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly (SNPA) held on May 20, at the Eko Hotels in Lagos. Over the weekend, 28- year- old Friday Obasi collapsed while sparing with fellow boxer at the boxing gym of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Oyo Ibadan. Reports gathered indicates that Obasi fell after receiving a punch from his pairing partner and hit his head on the concrete floor while they were training. Prior to this tragic incident, Obasi was said not to have shown any sign of stress or fatigue. Reports also revealed that there was no immediate medical help for the late boxer as the clinic inside the stadium complex was yet to resume operations as at 11am when the incident occurred.
